    Please explain MSSmartTagsPreventParsing" content="true"

    Please could someone explain to me, in simple terms, what this meta tag is used for and why it might be of advantage to have it included on some websites. There is a lot about it on search engines and forums but I just can't find a simple explanation of what it is for. Many thanks in advance.

    There's no SEO advantage. MS once played with some sort of intellitxt equivalent (turning some words on pages into ads, like on SEOChat's articles). Putting this tag on one of your pages would prevent this from happening on that page.

    Nowadays, this meta is completely obsolete

    SmartTags allows certain software products to look out for defined keywords and regular expressions in web pages. office documents, etc. When a keyword is identified, an option to lookup more information related to it is given to the user. I don't think SmartTags really took off as I don't hear anything about them any more, but the functionality is still in some software products.

    There was some cause for concern that this would mean your web pages may not display as you intend them to, or content you did not intend to be on your page, could be attatched. Ads, links to external sites, etc...

    The use of the following meta tag disables MS SmartTags for the page it is placed in:-

    <meta name="MSSmartTagsPreventParsing" content="TRUE">

    A List Apart has an oldish but interesting article on the pros and cons of SmartTags:-

    Apart from adding a few extra bytes to the size of your web page, there is no harm in including it, but I doubt it is really necessary.
