Order of h1-h6 tags

Hello all,
Could someone please tell me if you have to keep the H tags in order down the page?

I have the H1 tags at the top of the pages but want to put in more H tags up t 6, however, some of the content which is important is at the bottom of the pages, so it is ok to put an H2 tag at the bottom, and then H3 half way up etc: or do they have to be in order?

Many thanks in advance

Put your most important headings in H1, and least important in h2, and even less important in h3. I would have them in order, but some might not. It would not seem right to me to have h1 at the bottom, h2 in the middle, and h3 at the top.

h1 = first heading on page
h2 = second heading on page
h3 = third heading on page

I suppose you could put them backwards, but why?

I advise you forget about h1 to 6 tags and write your content with headings that create suspense in the readers mind. Once you have written the content pop a few in h tags, including your more important phrases, and the secondary phrases you're targetting.

You can put them anyway that you want but the most emphasis is usually put on H1. Not sure why you would want to reorder them.

seogoat agrees: that's a better way to put it

Thanks for the replies, the reason I wanted to rearrange the order is because there are details further down the page which are more important than those just down from the initial heading.

I have put the page heading as H1 which is the most important phrase but because of the courses we offer and they way they run, I cannot change the order of the content on the page, but I would like the content lower on the page to have more emphasis.

I will change it round and see if it has any affect.

Again, many thanks for the comments

so test....and then analyze your results.....IMHO, and <h> tag is worth only a small bit of on-page juice...but you shouldn't miss any! so test and learn what works for you!

You do not have to have them in order on the page top to bottom.
<h1>
<h2>
<h3>
<h4>
etc.....

The reason I say this is that they are supposed to rank importance of the header, not the position on the page. Think of it like you would writing an outline for a speech, using the standard Roman Numerals type structure.

I. Intro (H1)
II. Topic 1 (H1)
A. Subpoint 1.1 (H2)
B. Subpoint 1.2 (H2)
1. Sub-subpoint 1.2.1 (H3)
2. Sub-subpoint 1.2.2 (H3)
a. Sub-sub-subpoint 1.2.2.1 (H4)
b. Sub-sub-subpoint 1.2.2.2 (H4)
III. Topic 2 (H1)
A. Subpoint 2.1 (H2)
B. Subpoint 2.2 (H2)
IV. Conclusion (H1)

Header tags are meant to structure a page in the same manner. So while your most important points should be your H1 tags, next important H2, and so on, this does not mean they have to be ordered by importance.

*But as stated above, focusing on a minor point like this will not get you very far.
