Nominet To Introduce .UK, problems for CO.Uk

    http://www.nominet.org.uk/news/lates...n-name-service

    http://www.bbc.co.uk/news/technology-19767014

Basically nominet are planning to make it available for people to register domain.uk instead of domain.co.uk

Instead of 5 for two years for .co.uk, the cost will be 20 per year for uk..

Apparently they plan to offer TM holders first rights at the uk..

But certain things aren't TM are they? say for instance boots.uk.. those sort of sites I believe will get auctioned off.

I'm far (very far) from an expert on all of this..

Will be interesting if it does come to pass.. nice money spinner for nominet, they spent years telling everyone about how people trust the "co.uk" and how the average uk person prefers it.. now they're saying the ".uk" is being released under the guise it's more secure so apparently now they have been lying and you shouldn't trust the co.uk.. lol.

Edit> A very detailed point of view from a UK domainer.

Big companies like Boots will just buy the boots.uk domain to redirect to their .co.uk version... Saves them the grief of having to sue trademark infringers trying to score off the back of them.

maybe they will but if it goes to auction they will have to pay massively over the odds for it, as people will know it is a moneymaker.

Just seems like a big scam to me, just make loads more money from everyone
