    meta tag

    Hi

I am little confused about meta tags. As I know they don't have any importance to your google position any longer. Is that true?

To expand a little, meta tags are of pretty low importance when it comes to SEO. In general most people don't use the meta keywords tag any more and most still use the meta description tag. There are some arguments either way on the meta description tag, but using it or omitting it wont have a significant effect at all. Google's webmaster SEO guidelines suggest that you use the meta description tag but doesn't suggest that you should use the meta keywords tag.

As a general note on meta tags and SEO - if you hear someone offer to optimize your meta tags - RUN! This "technique" is almost a decade old yet still wont die out.

Do not make a critical mistake and think the <title> element is a Meta tag. It is likely the most important on page component of SEO.

I still like to use the description meta tag a lot.
It gives me control of what I want to be seen in the results pages.

META tags :-are extremely useful for your site as they help it get listed in search engines, identify the creator of the page, what HTML specs the site has, etc etc etc. Meta tags can even help to avoid the page that has it being framed!

    • tstolber → disagrees: meta tags do not help you get listed in the search engines at all. The search engine already had to know about your page before it could read the meta tags.
