"It appears as though links in signatures have proven a problem with Google". How do you know this? And how can google indentify that the link is a signature?

It really isn't a case of Goggle spoting signatures.

What Google saw was a large number of uniquie outbound links some of which repeat many times.

Google considers that to be indicative of a link farm, and they don't like link farms.
