Jackets only?

I see, while reading through the accounts of highly ranked users that they have received 'rep' for posts (often with interesting titles) that bar my access and give the message 'Jackets Only' when I click on them.

Is there an inner circle that discuss things that you don't want to publicly talk about (probably for good reason!)

Yes, there is a jackets forum section.

You have to be invited personally by an existing jackets member, you can not ask for a place yourself..

the fellow "jackets" then discuss the members nomination and whether they would be a good addition to the inner circle.

Then there is three test to find out if the nominated party is made of the right stuff.. fail any of these tests and you have to wait for 6 months before you can try again.

I can't say anymore than that.

That makes sense of why the 'good stuff' isn't around as much as it used to be - but at least some of the guys are. It very much makes sense - I've been around some of the stuff that has 'gone wrong' shall we say in the past few years and wished a lot of it was private (from Google anyway).

There is certainly still the odd 'gem' amongst all the daily noise.

The forum has been sucking up a lot of my time recently (getting addicted again!) so am going to try to spend it more wisely.

You need 500 posts is all, it's usually quite quiet in there to be honest.

If you want to read some good posts, just go read all of EGOL's. Fathoms etc, there are lots of regular gems from them and other senior members here.

That's funny - I thought it was a good, but very strict idea to keep the 'touts' (that might be a northern Ireland word) out.

I generally try to only post when I feel I can add something - rep is certainly not everything, but the closer the ratio (posts:rep) the better I guessed, but it is still very hard to come by.

I would have butted in left right and centre if I'd known I had to get up to 500 posts!

Thanks Josh, that's really thoughtful (I'm really impressed with the moderating I've seen on the forum - one which is visited by an incredible amount of bots and spammers - I'm not just sucking up BTW!) but a big part of it is not wanting to reveal my business/websites and therefore have a 'clean' history where nobody can cause trouble if they wanted to.

I'm going to try to be a bit more wise with my time now - and break my forum addiction - so I'm looking forward to having a look at the Jackets only forum - in 2-3 years, but on the bright side there will be a build up of loads and loads of great, unspammed stuff by then!
