Read this forum regularly and ask your questions.
You can't become an seo expert in 1 day, it takes time and lot of patience.

An expert knows everything about a subject and I don't so I'd consider my SEO knowledge advanced but not expert. I learned it the same way everyone does, reading, reading more reading and then testing.(Oh, and plenty of discussing issues on forums like this one - very important for developing informed opinions)

ditto... 2 + years of reading this forum and others.... replacing techniques i once used years ago, with new ones i learned last month. am i an expert? no, but i can handle my own. ive got my clients on 1st pages, and even #1 rankings..

testing ideas. testing other peoples ideas. having patience.
seo does not happen over night...

i love those companies that charge people thousands of dollars to get them on the first page of google, for about two weeks,.... then when the site starts to slip, they tell the client "we did our part of the contract"... but we can update yoru site and keep it "fresh" for another thousand dollars...

SEO pays for itself... "learn it or perish in the bottomless depths of web-hell forever"... (ok maybe not that serious)

The Canadian government paid a quarter of a million dollar to send me on an advance submarine 'search' course... in 1989... a good chunk of that was diving into search algorithms for sorting, pattern recognition and determining 'who was who when you can't see them you can only listen to them...

BY 1996 search engine algorithms opted a new challenge; one where "the man" didn't own my ***... so I jumped ship!

Took my severance leave and pay and started a SEO company.

LOL! There has been an increasing amount of posts by people saying "an SEO client of mine wants me to do back linking but what is a back link"!.

Its shocking that some people are actually charging customers when they don't even know the basics of SEO.

This is the problem with this industry, there are so many people offering services and all it takes is a web site and some business cards to appear to be an "expert".
The other main problem is that it is not understood by most clients so many people can have a bad experience which tarnishes their pereception of the entire industry.

I've been doing SEO for years now and some guy who thinks he knows a little SEO wants backlinks - I told him those are just a fad that won't last; real search engines want Meta Tags.

But just to be sure - what the hell are backlinks?

I've bought milions of links going to one site, or page and this helped one of our sites really get ranked high (first page). It worked for a while but it did not last; however, to rank on Google, you need back links if you want to really get up there and compete. This means links coming from high PR pages INTO your site (one way.) The more the better. It works okay if it's organic, but again, buying them is a short term solution. Still, with the right budget, it can be used...it must be used.

The journey started back in 2003, just after graduating with a bachelors in commerce.

At that time, I was in search of a job and got one in which I had to send mails and ask other webmasters to place a link to our site on their site....came to know that it was called a "Reciprocal link exchange"

So good so far, but I have this inherent nature of being "too curious"...so I questioned everything about link exchange...and came to know that it had something to do with the search engine ranks of a website along with sending traffic.

Started my endeavor in knowing more about how search engines work...read lots of stuff..and then got hands on the ebook "SEO Made Easy" by Brad Callen...read it..once...twice...thrice and somehow the subject fascinated me...Did a search on Google for further learning resources and landed straight on SEOchat...and since then there has been no looking back.

Far from being an expert, but thanks to SEOchat and its awesome members...today I have a job as an SEO consultant.

So if you want to be an SEO consultant, you need to have the following:

1. A burning desire to know the subject.

2. Read tons of stuff, online/ offline.

3. Experiment

4. Think outside the box.

5. Think from the perspective of industry peers and your targeted audiences.

6. Brainstorm.

7. Participate in numerous SEO communities/ conferences, exchange and challenge ideas.

And the most important thing...never ever give up! In this journey, you will make tons of mistakes, you will ruin as well as build ranks...but your success or failure lies in your ability of how you look at things.

Your biggest enemy: Complacency and a feeling of being an SEO Expert. The day you feel that you "Know it all"...you can be sure, that you're finished!

Stay hungry - stay foolish!

I still do not consider myself an SEO expert. I have a good base of SEO knowledge that has grown over the years. Unless you are actually successfully selling your SEO services, devoting hour upon hour every day on your own sites, or employed to do SEO activities day after day, i.e. eating and sleeping SEO, I don't think you will spend enough time to become a true SEO expert. Currently, I spend a maximum of only 3-4 hours per week on true SEO activities. How can you become an expert or maintain expert status unless you are totally immersed in an activity.

There are very few SEOs that I consider to be "SEO experts". Don't get me wrong... I know a lot about SEO... but should I consider myself an expert?
