I wanted a job that took 10 minutes to explain to anyone who asked "what do you do?"

lolz, u shud be thankful that it just takes 10 mins in ur part of the world. Sometimes i have to start from "what's internet" to tell someone "what's seo" here. And quite often i end up getting remarks like " What The Hellllll" :p

by accident literally.
Was working in Simi Valley based company as a Mechanical engineer.
Lost the job in 2003 when a spinal cord tumor rendered me paralyzed shoulder downwards ( T3 paraplegia )

I wanted to switch from stocks trading which although very lucrative was too risky for my profile. Sitting at home i learnt HTML/CSS/dreamweaver/fireworks/flash and some php.

Then I found SC forum through Google search last year and it's been an incredibly satisfying journey so far.

I just focus on 4 sites now that i'm a partner in and i don't think i'll ever do SEO for others now lol

Of course the biggest credit goes to this forum in literally resurrecting me

That's good to see people coming by chance and then staying in this field happily after but do you people think seo can stand or compete with other careers, say like banking, HR or commerce, etc?

Orkut
It's a bit long story but briefing it out. I was working with a multinational company as a sales personal at my place and worked for around 2 yrs but due to an evil friend who fired at my back by misleading my boss. I resigned from the company.

The point turn around and i got an opportunity with a company which is in the website designing. Though i have done Software Engineering therefore got the job as a sales and website developer.

But one day my boss asked me to study and work on SEO, from that day i started learning and exploring the resources and have gained lot of knowledge on SEO and now dealing some of the projects.

I want to say never loose hope or hard work as this is what can bring some dynamic changes in life as it has worked for me as i totally changed my working criteria from sales to IT after working for long time. I worked hard and got support from many forum members also.

So, thanks to each end everyone and i am still learning as learning is an on going process for me.

SEO is a niche specialty that will exist until search engines are not important communication and research tools or until the search engines are smart enough to assess a page without special efforts done by the webmaster.

I am one of the old farts around here and it might be a good way for an old fart to end his series of careers... however, if I think back on how communication has been done in the past I can remember.... times before computers, before fax, before mobile phone, before the internet..

If you are a young person thinking that your life-long work will be in SEO then you are dreaming.
