How can I stop spamming in my forum?
Dear professionals:
I am seeking your help if you could possibly guide me and help me. Just recently, and suddenly, I started getting a lot of spam from some individual(s) who register in my forum with so many different userid's and post inappropriate material. I must have deleted and banned over a 100 userid's, but they don't stop. My site/forum is a fan group of an actor and have young members of minor ages that shouldn't be exposed to the material they've been posting. any suggestions or help anyone could offer I would greatly appreciate. I am not a computer savvy nor do I understand technical computer terms, my webmaster was a friend and he went on with his new career and now has no time for the site, so I do not know how to get this fixed or handled. many thanks. |

Sorry couldn't resisit. You cannot really eliminate it but may be able to reduce it. Make sure your forum is set to have all links are 'no followed' and make that very clear when people sign up. Try to get some of your regular posters to become moderators and have them delete the spam. Ban any spammers. Add a report spam button to posts. These are really about all you can do... Best of luck..

And after doing everything that gazzahk has told, Hire a few Moderators for the forum who can take actions speedily in case spam starts to glow!

If they are human visitors who register and post via the normal process, just follow what gazzahk and lovekills_s suggested in the previous posts.
If you are spammed by bots (automatic spam programs), there are several other options. Depending of the forum script that you are using, it may already exist "captcha" modules that can be implemented. You can also check your logs to see if these spammers come from a specific range of IP addresses or from specific countries and then put some rules in your .htaccess to deny them access to your forum. Examples: Code:
RewriteCond %{HTTP_ACCEPT_LANGUAGE} ^zh [NC]
RewriteRule register\.php - [F]
This will prevent people with a Chinese language (ZH) defined in their browser from registering to your forum. Code:
deny from 213.186.103. deny from 212.113.56. That's what I did on one of my blogs to block some spammers from Ukraine. The problem with IP ranges blocking: it can also prevent legitimate visitors from registering. Code:
RewriteCond %{REMOTE_ADDR} ^213\.186\.103\.([0-255])$ [OR]
RewriteCond %{REMOTE_ADDR} ^212\.113\.56\.([0-255])$
RewriteRule register\.php - [F]
same IP as above, but in this case, you just prevent them from registering, not to see your forum. Last edited by Keiros : October 6th, 2008 at 08:20 AM. |
