We had a little discussion here about affect~v~effect. They both kinda mean the same according to Webster. I know we have some top notch writers in here....Sooo
What's the difference between the two, and when should one be used over the other?

Effect is a noun and affect is a verb. So, you could say,
-How will this affect my website?
Or you could say,
-What will the effect be on my website?
There are some instances where effect could be used as a verb to mean "brought about", such as "We made some changes which effected a better Google ranking", but that use is not common.
I think that you should buy an English book, or a dictionary or just Google those words.
* "It's not the size of the dog in the fight that matters, it's the size of the fight in the dog." Mark Twain
* "Free advice isn't worth much. Cheap advice is worth even less." EGOL
Correctness isn't my bag, as you should well know and
I've got a dictionary, it pretty much said they meant the same thing...However I didn't notice one was a noun and the other a verb. That would have answered my question, if I'd seen it.
You have no idea as to how your comments affected me..not only that but this effect will probably last for years.![]()
JK...thanks for the reply.
Sometimes you need to read things three or four times.
Then sit and think. Then read again.
If a new member posted this, would it have been deleted?
Hard to say. I'd like to think in my case, looking at the generally good English, I'd have given them the benefit of the doubt. But yeah, that's a good question.Originally Posted by jsteele823

PPS: if - at some point - we're going to add "poor English" as a banning trigger, then these things need to be sorted out eh!?![]()
yeah... it really pisses me off to see webmasters who don't know the difference between.....
site
sight

You would think that with as much as they use the word "website" they would know the difference between these.
so, Affect may mean:
To have an influence on or cause a change in
To act on the emotions of
To attack or infect
while effect means
The power to produce an outcome or achieve a result; influence
Advantage; avail
A particular impression
and by the way there are grammar rules about the usage of these words.
I think there's a difference between poor English and broken English...No?Originally Posted by jsteele823
I did not mean that in the context of command of the english language - I don't see that as a reason to delete anything on a public, international forum.Originally Posted by Test-ok
I meant that as in something that could be Googled or searched for.
LOL JS depends on T9 duh
I'm just sayin - I think it was DarrenHaye suggesting we start deleting threads on Google-able subjects.......
I disagree with that sentiment.
So what's the public opinion?
I prefer to drop the lmgtfy.com bomb on those, then close. It's more satisfying, and it still makes us rank for the keywords mentioned![]()
