Brand New Site at Page Rank 4?

I've been helping a friend build a new WP site (only a month or so old), we haven't really touched the links yet (apart from a couple of stumbleupon's and similar) and the home page is a Page Rank 4.

Yes I know domain authority is key rather than PR, but our own, very comprehensive site with large amounts of links is only a PR2 - I just can't make sense of it.

Does it ever make sense? I know it doesn't really matter (unless we were pitching for links) but it does seem a little illogical....

It wont be accurate, unless of course your friend bought an expiring domain with an existing history of backlinks.. or you friend has created something brilliant that sites have been jumping over themselves to link to

Just guessing without seeing the site.. best guess would be inaccurate.

The site is menorcanvillas dot co dot uk. Not finished yet and not even optimised properly (a word press site). She's not aware of it being an expired domain, just purchased because the domain name suited her business.

    Curiouser and curiouser.

Yes that site is not a PR4.

Another testament to visible pagerank not being a good metric for anything.

How is it showing as PR4 in checkers? Am I missing something obvious?

    • DarrenHaye → agrees: Visible pagerank just isn't as accurate as one would expect sometimes.

Forgive me if I cannot cry for you. My site which is about 4 months old, went from page 4 to page 12. Please cry for me instead!!!

If you do get if figured, let me know. I need a Google favor myself.

Can't tell you for sure without a URL.

    Oops, I don't pay attention.

Looks like PR toolbar is simply out of date.

The PR shows as 4 in all the page rank checkers too, curiously. One thing may give a hint though, seomastering.com fake/ real PR checker states the PR is real and with a history going back to 2002 (according to wayback it looks like the domain expired in 2004).

Could it be that despite 8 years inactivity, Google is seeing this as an aged domain and giving it some kudos for that reason?
