Article Discussion: Search Engine and Directory Submission: Automated, Manual, or Not at All?

If you want your site to be found on the Internet, very few people would debate the wisdom of submitting it to Google or DMOZ. It obviously makes sense to be listed on the premier search engine and in the top directory. But what about all those other directories and engines out there? Is it worthwhile being listed, and if so, is it better to make your submission manually or use an automated software tool? This article will examine these questions and in the process try to determine what to look for if you decide to use an automated tool for submission.

I agree with dejaone, search engine submissions are a complete waste of time, if you submitted your site to Google and waited for the worlds to come to you, you would wait for quite a while.

The only directory woth submitting to is DMOZ, but it has become such a farce who nows if you will get in and when.

Backlinks from PR4s is the real world SE submisssion tool. Then you will get picked up by the SEs.

Sorry to say but I closed the window after the lines 'Some search engines and directories make it virtually impossible to be included except by manual submission. The two best examples are perhaps Google and DMOZ.'. If the guy writing the article couldn't get the simple stuff right then life's too short to be wasted reading the rest.

Sorry if it sounds a little harsh but good grief. Even some of the greenest know that google does not need to be submitted to at all if you're doing SEO even half seriously.

Not to be cynical, but whats the big deal over getting in DMOZ? Every one I know who is in there gets very little traffic from them, and they get more traffic from small minor search engines. I read about this person who tried for 6 months to get listed in DMOZ, finally he gets listed and he didn't even notice it for weeks! Very little traffic. So there must be some other benefit here otherwise it just seems like a waste of time. What am I missing? Certainly not the traffic from them : )
