Article Discussion: An Insight Into Google\'s Florida

Recently, Google undertook a major update in its search algorithms. On November 16th 2003 Google rolled out the popularly known "Florida Update." This week on SEO Chat we'll be taking a close look at the "Florida Update" and what it can mean to you and your business. In this first article Nakul goes over some of the features of this new update. "The 'Florida' update has been said to have a vast similarity to a sea storm for ecommerce business because most of them were dislocated in the search listings resulting in loosing targeted traffic and ultimately loosing business."

    Great Summary, ...but

"... the webpage text is also over burdened by keywords or key phrases, then that page should be down trodden the index feet and penalized for over-optimization." What does THAT mean?

The statement that negates the ENTIRE article -
"Google will always be friendly if you play safe and believe in organic SEO"
You gotta be kidding. Why such Blatant Boot-licking Bulls**t? Are you really GG in disguise?

And WHICH "senior people from Google" said that everything will return to normal? WHO said this? You quote no source.

The article is basically an attempt to summarize what is STILL SPECULATION.

OK, THE REAL THING! Trying to read a body of text, while there is flashing, spinning, gyrating SPAM next to it, drives me right out of my mind. This is the REAL reason for my negative comments. NOTHING pi**es me off more than this. It is my ONLY criticism of this forum, but it is huge. Read this - NO READ THIS - keep reading - NO READ THIS - try to read - NO READ THIS. This is the most agravating, exasperating, frustrating distraction possible. Normally, in these situations, I am GONE with the first flash. But I REALLY wanted to read this. I am sick of taping the cardstock to my screen, so I can ACTUALLY read text for understanding. Or cutting-and-pasting into Word, just so I can think, unmolested.
Who the heII is going to respond positively to someone poking you with a stick EVERY TWO SECONDS. Literally. Exactly. Precisely. EVERY TWO SECONDS! AHHHHHHHHH!!!!! You just want to escape. Go-Daddy can go burn in heII. Yeah, baby! God, that feels good.
You know how people feel about flashing banners and pop-ups.
Why would you think that furiously flashing ads would be any different?

OK. Sorry, Nakul. I think that you have made a fine article.
I could not have done better, so I should shut up.
There are always DISTRACTIONS which get in the way, and keep us from discerning truth. This applies to the Google Florida Fiasco, as well. Separating various apparent data correlations (distractions) from true data correlations is what it is all about. I applaud your efforts.

As for the edits, I'll take care of them. Those were a massive brain-plop. Sorry about that.

As for the actual content... Nakul, care to respond?

Also, what "spinning, gyrating crap" are you talking about ? Is it an ad?

Well I thought the article was pretty good. Obviously we don't know everything about Google at this point and someone will always disagree with something when we never know for 100% certainty.

But you laid out the new features nicely I thought. I think it is clear at this point that at least some of those are implemented; if it was anything less complicated it would have been figured out by now.

    Nakul

This is not bad at all. You have accomplished something in the sense of actually thinking like a search engine (in this case Google) Although, once again there is some claims and stains that I dissagree with. Nakul, job well done. I think we need more of these kind of articles.

    Nakul,
A nice article, if you could have got this out a few weeks earlier, it would have been really hot.

I want to comment on one point,

Then, PageRank was recomputed for the entire web which acted as a sword against spam tricks.
I think the florida update did not involve a pagerank recomputation. The effect that page rank has on the result may have changed. It is no longer the only major factor although it still plays a role to some degree.

The sword against the tricks was the selective filter for commercial keywords. No Page Rank Recomputation was involved, what do you think ?

I have read and re-read the Hilltop paper and have some thoughts, interested to hear others ideas on this.

a)From what I understand the first step is to establish "Expert Directories" with many non affiliated links to other relevant sites ie. directories, portals etc.

b)These sites once identified will be searched as Expert pages on the search subject and any relevant site that they list to will be ranked for the search results by title, headings, kw, general content/ theme, anchor text in the links pointing to them and how many relevant "Expert" pages are doing so. Hope I've understood that right!

Anyway my point, if you think about what has happened, when Florida first hit what was being served up top in the SERPS?

Directories, portals, educational sites etc... Sound familiar to a) ?

    Sorry didn't finish that post

What if the first results we were seeing was the introduction of the Hilltop algo and thing have been generally improving as the Expert pages have been indexed and the rest are now being indexed to give the proper content for the SERPS?

    What are your thoughts?

    Hey Rojo

Curious to know what you are doing to "look into this"?

I finished in December in the Real Estate industry. At that stage I was on the vurge of cracking the problem (or I believe I was) I started now in the Casino industry and am convinced that the biggest player in the Google Algo is Backlinks. The amount of times the keyword apeares in their content of the sites linking to you etc. Without sounding like I know anything yet or quoting any facts this should summarise my opinion.

I am absolutely positive that this is the sure way for Google to fight back against SEO. In this way the actual site you are doing SEO for is helping the sites you are linking to and so forth. This is why every-one is completely rattled! The problem is if you have a 1000 backlinks it means you have a 1000 websites to eveluate! Keeping Applied Semantics in mind this can be an enourmous workload and close to impossible. This means that you cannot personaly influence your rankings in anyway apart from being smart when getting the right sites to link to yours!

Anyway that is what I am heading at without the technical jargon...:-?
