Google vs Inktomi in terms of algorithm
i hold number 1 for most of my phrases in Google.
Although I am in Inktomi, my pages are not even in top 10 for the same phrases. (I am not talking about the new site I had posted before) Since I believe Inktomi will be growing rapidly in 2003, I want to secure my ranking asap. (I just hope Yahoo! won't switch to Inktomi.) So, what's the big difference anyone had noticed in the algorithms of Google and Inktomi??? If you have any theories about anything, let us know. |

I've mainly noticed that if you aren't in the "About directory" you are at a disadvantage at MSN.

I've been lucky thus far in that I usually manage to get high rankings in both Google & Inktomi .. along with the other engines

Darrin,
Are you using the same pages for both Google and Inktomi? What do you think Inktomi like to see on a page other than the things google likes? Thanks |

well the main difference i noticed is that inkatomi pay more attention to keywords in the Url line .
Nameing your page with the use of your keywords will boost your ranking at inkatomi |

INK and Fast both love keyword in the first position URL sep. by - , and title sep. by blank space or -. Backward link text can bomb this engine easy.

Other than that - what do they like? I have been changing things all the time because at one point I was doing really well on the Inktomi and Fast networks, but doing terribly on Google/Yahoo. Now, it's the opposite. I *think* I have all the right keywords placed where they need to be, and the density is not insane (5-8% typically). In fact, I have looked at some of the web sites that are in the #1 position for certain keywords and I have matched their KWD and can't seem to get better results. Thoughts?

Well in my experience, inbound links are not too important with a very good optimization. Meaning that you can place well with links aside if you focus on just several keyword phrases. One site that I have for fun has a PR0 on google. But I ranked top 10 above sites such as bbc.co.uk. Not to worried about PR for that site.
Plus if I optimize for MSN/Inktomi I keep the <title> tag short with the most important keywords. Anything that you are not targeting you should keep out of the title. I am gathering that Inktomi is more keyword specific, meaning to gain more effect on your rankings just target the keywords and more weight will be placed on them. Then you can place well for phrase searching too. Alot of traffic I get is from words (not even on the page) in combination with my target keywords. I could be wrong no doubt. Just some observations.
