Altavista to be Yahoo! test bed

Many experts believe that Altavista were due to get the chop once the Yahoo!/Overture deal goes through. Not so according to a Yahoo! executive.

Extract from IDG News service:
"Yahoo may continue with the AltaVista Web site after it completes its acquisition of Overture Services, and may use some of AltaVista's search technologies on its own portal sites, according to an executive of Sunnyvale, California-based Yahoo. AltaVista, a provider of Web search services and technology, is currently a business of Overture. "

It seems Altavista is going to be used as some kind of feature/algo guinea pig. Whether they wil have a big enough sample of searchers left for reasonable feedback is another matter ;-)

I spoke with an overture rep, he said that overture plans on migrating AltaVista and FastSearch technologies into one. It will take some time but its going to happen.

And do what with it though?
Implement it on AllTheWeb or Altavista?
Yahoo! have to decide what engine they are going to put forward as the Google competitor. I'm no tsure if relaunching yahoo as a search engine would work personally.

I think they will keep them as alltheweb and altavista, just use the same technology.

The list includes:
AltaVista
AllTheWeb
Lycos
InfoSpace
HotBot
Dogpile
Metacrawler
T Online
WebCrawler
Telus
Tiscali
MySearch
MyWay
and more...
