Alexa ranking

Alexa gives one of my site a ranking of 3,350,849, and that site has been around less than a year. Another site, with much more traffic, much more links to it, gets ranked as 0. Any reason why?

The lower the numbers the better in Alexa...

When Alexa ranks you - it is ranking you on a chart with other websites. If you are No.1 then you are the best - the higher the number the less traffic you supposedly get (based on those using the Alexa Toolbar).

Just like the music charts!!!

I don't really understand this calculation!

First of all, I think Alexa Toolbar-Users are more international than German.

I wanted to test the toolbar, so I installed it last week and did all my surfing with it. You see, Darrin, since then your traffic rank is 7686!!!

I tested it especially with my german, not sooo often visited diary (approx 50 visitors a day) bloggitt.de. Since this Morning it has a traffic rank of 692,322

When I compare this to another portal of mine (over 2,500 visitors a day, international) crazy-crazy.de: 1,079,570 Traffic Rank

This Comparison just doesn't make sence to me. It can't be just me surfing around here, does it?

What are your thoughts?

Regards,
Birthe

Thats the idea. The lower the rank , the higher the visits the site has.

Just check out Yahoo and Google.

Yahoo is ranked as 1
Google is ranked as 5.

That's what I mean:

bloggitt.de - 50 Vis/Day - PR0 (too new) - traffic rank 692,322
crazy-crazy.de - 2500 Vis/Day - P5 - 1,079,570 Traffic Rank

???

It's important to remember that it's not only unique hits that count - but rather visits too.

If I had 500 visitors daily and each visitor viewed 200 pages EACH then it might easily out-rank a site with 5,000 visitors dail if each viewed only 2 or 3 pages.

This is based on the assumption that all of the visitors have the Alexa Toolbar installed!!

Even then it doesn't make sense to me:

bloggitt.de - 50 Vis/Day - 200 PV/Day - PR0 (too new) - traffic rank 692,322
crazy-crazy.de - 2500 Vis/Day - 5500 PV/Day - P5 - 1,079,570 Traffic Rank

PV=PageView

It looks to me as if only few people use the toolbar, and decide the Traffic Rank...

How important is all of this?
I never really think about Alexa. Should I?

stuijts,

You got to give it some time. The Alexa bot has to crawl your site to start tracking. So its hard to compare two sites where one is new and the other is more established. The general rule I follow is to give it 3 months time to be accurate.

But Darrin is right about the page views.

Different uses for different folks. There are a lot of things I use it for, and it has actually saved me a bunch of money in advertising. I reccommend doing a search for "alexa" in on the forum, there are some good Alexa posts and topic to explain it fully.

LOL. Impatient, I know the feeling. Especially before a Google Dance. Did I do everything right, when the hell is it going to start, links...and so on. But its all fun.

Consider Alexa cheap insurance in a way. Its like a plant, water it (with visitors), and let it grow (lower score) for you. You don't have to do anything. Then after a period of time, you can gauge your traffic ranking. What advertising worked what did overall on the whole site. If you want to trade links and ex: Bob's Pizza claims to get 100,000 hits a day, and you check there alexa rating and its (3,999,000 = hardly any traffic) you know the dude is lying.

Check out this email I got today:

The global B2B platform for textile related business

By clicking on alexa.com, you can check our rank:

We are the world n°1 textile portal !
Discover who is who and who does what

I am not in textile in any way, I get this emails from some domains that after 1 year are still sending traffic and emails. So its funny the stuff that goes through. I got an email once from the same domain from a previous co-worker needing to tell someone that worked previously for the company she was pregnant. I rolled and rolled on the floor laughing.

Alexa has been around a long time. It was bought by Amazon a while back. It is a highly inaccurate ranking. It gives you a ranking based on the sites that Alexa users have been to. If this skews to techies and those of us with web sites of our own, it won't reflect the population of the web.

Before my site got into any search engines and I was the only Alexa user hitting it, I ranked sub-100K. To Darrin's point, me as the 1 user had a lot of page views.
