$39 Per Page Inktomi ?

I've read all the posts in this forum, and am still unclear about crawling with Inktomi. Do I have to pay $39 for each page I want added to the Inktomi powered engines? Their site does not clearly state this, and an email I just received from Position Technologies suggests that this might be the case, but is not clear as well. Thanks.

I think you have to sign up through someone like position tech - http://www.positiontech.com/inktomi/searchsubmit.htm

Does anyone know why my sites are getting spidered by ink bots several times a day *and* appear in their results (although I get very little traffic). They are just personal/non-profit sites, is this a free way to get in?

Email to Position Tech:

And do I have to pay to have each page crawled?

Say I paid $39.00 to submit http://www.mydomain.com, does that mean only my homepage will
be listed in Inktomi?

Response:

Correct, you have to pay for each page that you wish to have indexed.

Best Regards,

Sales
Position Technologies

Could this be so? How are they providing the best search results possible if they will only index one page at $39.00? Something definitely seems wrong with this, and if true, how can they be considered a real search engine?

I believe they have a different use of the Terminology "URL","webpages","website". I think it's very confusing

Just read this:
(copied from their help file as I only found it in secure area):

Quote:
How does the Spider work?

Answer
  • The spider goes to a web site and follows hyperlinks throughout the site.

The spider parses (reads in) certain pages and downloads them into a file or database as it moves through a web site. The spider is set to only parse a set number of pages on the same site.

When the spider has reached the limit of URLs determined by the user's subscription service, it stops spidering your web site.

The file of spidered URLs are then built into a search catalog. These URL's are displayed as part of search results when a relevant match is made.

Spidering starts at the root URL (ex: www.lycos.com is the root URL vs. www.lycos.com/search) and discovers the total number of URL's in your Web Site. Then, the spider collects and submits text from the parsed page into the catalog used to display search results. The spider will gather text from the number of web pages that the user included in the subscription, accessing pages by breadth and then depth. For example, under the root URL, a Web Site has 5 unique paths. Each path has links to 50 web pages. If the user paid for 20 URL's, the spider would collect text from the 5 unique paths first and then drill down into the first unique path and continue this process until the 20 URL's had been spidered.

We got an account since 3 or 4 days - they only listed the index.html, although inktomi spidered more pages... I can keep you informed, if you like.

Reg,
Birthe

We got a reply from Lycos:

Quote:
If you would like each of your pages within your web site to have a
separate listings within Lycos Search, you should submit each page. The
first URL costs $35 for FAST and $39 for Inktomi.

A lot of webmasters just choose to submit their home page and thus have
one listing within Lycos Search. People searching the web can then find
your home page, and of course can then navigate within your site once
they enter through the home page.

Please note that whether the spider follows the links on your submitted
page to index other pages from your domain is beyond our control. The
process is automatically done by the spiders that visit your site.
Although there are no guarantees, a site with well link structure is
more likely to have a deep crawl.

For information on submitting via Lycos InSite Select, please go to:
http://insite.lycos.com/searchservices/select/select_overview.asp

Thank you for using Lycos InSite!

What are you saying to this???
