'site.co.uk' vs. 'uk.site.com' SEO?

Good morning!

Can anyone provide insight on the pros and cons of selecting a UK subdomain for a US-based site? Specifically, given two choices -- 'site.co.uk' or 'uk.site.com' -- is one more effective within the search engines from an SEO perspective?
