My conclusion is, that small search engine submission - waste of time, most of them just collect thousands affiliate and PPC links and when you searching sumething their links comming out. Moreover, there is no pages on their sites which link your site, and Google, Yahoo, ASK, MSN can't find them.

Directories and article submission much better!

No reason not to submit your sites to smaller engines, but also no reason to pay for this. Always best, in my opinion, to manually submit your site so that you are in control of your submissions, and don't end up possibly getting listed in link farms.

Glad you said "Most of them" and not "all of them". For example, my SE (in my profile) has two options, a site suggestion that requires no email, and a webmaster submission tool for a higher priority crawl, but requires your email ONLY for validation that you own the site, and to email you once your site has been successfully crawled.

Smaller SE's and starting-up SE's will not bring you a lot of traffic in the short term, but then again, neither would Google really once upon a time while Altavista was king. But I do think manual submission is best since you have control over just where your URL ends up! In the long term, you may start seeing some decent traffic from those smaller SE's that stuck around long enough.

Nobody knows how many web pages are out there, and not even Google will store all of them, so I think there's indeed room for smaller SE's. Also, you tend to find less stiff competition with your keywords with smaller SE's. So what's best? If you've got a site with a really competitive keyword, would you prefer to be on page 1 of a smaller SE or page 523 of Google? Who looks on page 523? ;)

In my view, 1 good referal on one of your targetted keywords is better than 100 incidental referals where you ranked well for something obscure.

Just my 2 cents.

The problem is , google yahoo and msn make up probably 98% of all searches worldwide, so all the others mean pretty much nothing.

IMHO, there's no need to submit to search engines, the popular ones will find you.

Yeah, best to just go for instant gratification. Who cares about the long term.

hmmm... "LONG TERM" don't submit to any fly by night search engines!

If they can't bother to crawl domains & follow links for their own success their "LONG TERM" can be clocked with that instant gratification you mentioned.

Obviously you don't care about long term since you need people to "submit" [as in a directory] but without any "link value".

Submitting To Small Search Engines = Lot's Of Unwanted E-mail

SUBMITTING TO SMALL SEARCH ENGINES = LOT'S OF UNWANTED E-MAIL

Since you have to essentially OPT-IN to many of these search engines you usually get a link from a site that no one ever visits and you also get a bunch of junk e-mail from that search engine and it's affiliates (and whoever else they send your e-mail address to).
