Wierd Googlebot activity going on..please explain

I recently redesigned one of my sites...it was sitting in the top 3 positions for a very highly competitive keyword....after i launched the new design, the rankings dropped severaly...i find my site on page 4 or 5 now....so, then keeping my new design, i keep on changing some bits and pieces every day to get my old ranking again..however my site doens't show a freshtag anymore and it is showing a very old cache...actually about a month old cache...the site is being visit by the google bots though...and the site has got quite a huge # of high PR backlinks too...so i dont know why it doesn't show the update cache everytime now....any ideas?

You need to be patient. Unless google crawls you everday all the time from other sites you have links from, you wont get updated in the serps that fast.

You dont get a freshtag just because it needs to index that new page and recognize it as new, changing it every 5 minutes and google coming back once or twice after isnt going to cut it.

Do changes, sit for a few weeks and watch what happens. Check your stats, ranks and links and make sure they're doing what you like "after" you see definate movement and changes either good or bad.

the site is an authorative site with lots of pages and backlinks...before this weird freshtag act, the site was showing fresh results and fresh dates on almost 300 of the pages...
its never happened before that a 1 month old cache is showing...

i think i wasn't clear enough...of the entire site, i only redesigned the frontpage...so i did not change any other html file names or anything else...infact i did not change any text/links on the frontpage too...as i was hoping to mantain my top 3 rankings...

today i got an email from inktomi this time, saying
"Inktomi has reported to Marketleap that the following 1 URL(s) reported an error on Inktomi's last attempted crawl.

4000 - Unknown Cause Of error"

I have made sure that i am not blocking the crawlers in any way. Dont know why first googlebot and now inktomi bot are going against my site...any thoughts?

try running your url through a spider simulator tool and see if that gives you any clue as to what the problem might be.

i've checked everything...i can't see any problems...i still get about 1 hit from teh 2.1 googlebot...but this doens't buy me freshtags or freshlistings.....i still rank on some minor keywords ...but on the whole i have dropped dramatically...the inbound links from High PR relevant sites have also been increasing ..this isn't helping either.....its really frustrating..where can i get help from now?

Do the inbound links show on a google backlink check?

I have been waiting 2 months for a bucket load of PR5 to PR8 links to show up

How do you know?

Forgive the ignorance, but I am new to this. How can you find out which bots are crawling your website? How do you realistically find out? Chrs. Basil
