Why do u'll guys need Google crawler IP's anyway (other than Cloaking)

U can get the whole list by doing a search for Google in Arin.

Suppose that I have an online newspaper that only allows paid members to read certain news articles. I want to position on those news articles but I don't want just anyone claiming to be Googlebot to be able to crawl those articles. By know which IPs Googlebot comes from I can allow the googlebot to bypass the login and crawl my site.



I would also specify in the meta tags that Googlebot cannot cache these stories. This way my members only stories will not be available free by reading the Google cache.



The arin database does not tell you which IPs Googlebot is coming from. I still would want Google employee's to pay for the news.

This is just one example. There are more.


I have IP addresses of people visiting my non cloaked sites claiming to be Googlebot. I'm now starting to see people claiming to be Mediapartners Googlebot as well. Why do people do this?

For detecting spoof crawlers which use the googlebot User Agent string.

(i.e. some people that duplicate websites (+steal content) use Googlebot - the only proper way to check is with checking the IP - User Agents can be easily modified)

Wasn't intended for blackhat techniques.

Mediapartners Googlebot is an googlebot for checking AdSense?

This is actually an Googlebot if you think it was a spoofed User Agent, but if the IP is not in that list then it is spoofed.

It's not Google. I realize that Google has a few bots out there. There is also the Frooglebot as well. The IP address that this Mediapartners Bot came from was 66.185.171.196, the user agent was reported as "Mediapartners-Google/2.1 (+http://www.googlebot.com/bot.html; libwww-perl/5.76; SYSTRAN)", the reverse DNS query reveals the host as "mailgw.systransoft.net" and the ARIN database indicates that the owner is NEXTLEVEL INTERNET.



There are a couple others that report the user agent as just "Mediapartners-Google/2.1" and by examining the reverse DNS and ARIN it is clear that they are not from Google.

But Mediapartners-Google/2.1 is an valid User Agent when its on its own.
