Get Crawled More Often - How?

I've had my site up for about 4 weeks, in week 2 it got crawled. Since then I've got a handful of links from sites pointing to mine, the pages on other sites containing links to mine have all been indexed in the past few days, but my site has still not been crawled since that initial crawl about 2-3 weeks ago. I thought that if google crawls a site that has my link, and then they obviously have indexed the page that had my link, they would have followed that link. Just wondering the best ways to get crawled more often. Thanks.

If you have a link on a site(s) that gets crawled often then the SE spider should follow your link as well.

I wonder if "no follow" plays a role in this?

I wonder that also, I'm going to have to go to all the sites with my link and see if there is a 'nofollow' in the code. Does anyone know if messageboards typically have 'nofollow' s in their code?

I don't think the bots will be all that impressed with a handful of forum profile and signature links, even if they don't have the rel="nofollow" attribute. I'm sure they need a better reason to come and crawl your stuff more often.

The best way to get crawled more often is to use XML sitemap.

what if I can't get to the root directory of a domain, so I can't put an sitemap on the root directory, I don't think the spiders search for/recognize xml sitemaps in any other directory but the root, is that correct? Could I create a makeshift sitemap which is not n the root directory, which basically would be a page that lists in order of importance the url of every single page on my website? I mean I know I could create it, and it would help visitors if they wanted to use it, but I wonder if bots would recognize that as a sort of sitemap, even though it's not in the standard xml sitemap format.

Very true! Sig links are more inclined on promoting a site within the forum members.

Message Board/Forum influence...

What are peoples thoughts about having a msg board as part of a site then? I've seen some sites get #1 position as a result of posts on their forum? Is it worth adding a forum to aid with SEO?

A forum can be very helpful for attracting additional longtail traffic, but don't add a forum just for SEO purposes. There's nothing worse than seeing a forum with just half a dozen posts from months previous - only add a forum if you can maintain it, attract forum members, and keep a reasonable posting rate going. Also consider how much time you want to devote to fighting spam - forums attract spammers like flies to *** (except that I have more respect for flies) - and forum moderation.

So true... and that not easy to develop either. You need a core active community to spawn posts from lurkers.

I've helped develop over a dozen forums in 10 years and only 2 because successful and one of those two is having a mid-life crisis where the core active members left and no one spawn much of anything - spammer come regularly to get their url drop but no real discussions.

So think long and hard before going this route.
