Are Mobile Redirects Harmful to SEO
Hi Guys. Just wanting to know if anyone has any info on mobile redirects and whether they are harmful for your main site in terms of SEO.
I have comflicting information from different poeple - wouldnt you know it- (web desiner and seo guy)
Can the site seo function normally with a modile re-direct in place?
p.s My site is having Mobile campatabilty issue currently and that is the reason im exploring the idea of attaching a mobile site to the main site.
thanks in advance.

Have you had a read of the google mobile seo guide https://developers.google.com/webmas...-sites/details, you can also google [google mobile guidelines] for more articles on the subject.
Also this article is quite good http://searchengineland.com/does-goo...actices-125362

you have 2 sites now
m.yourname.com
yourname.com
the m sub is the mobi and is optimized for mobi devices
you seo the main page with one simple script for mobi
it's a if the browser is one of 100 or so major mobi browsers the page automatically moves the user to the m or mobi sub domain
a few years ago we invested a ton into emd's in the .mobi tld just in case google ever decided to send mobi users to a real mobi tld
the switch never came
so now we hold very little in the .mobi tld
we use m subdomains and have no problem with google, other than they hate EMD's now for high valued terms
so if your web guy knows how to do the simple script that redirects mobi users, it won't mess up seo
seo is now messed up due to google targeting emd's
so georoofer.com was good until 7 weeks ago
now it's a dead name
considered an emd
so any drops in organic is not from a mobi direct
it's due to an emd kill switch
I know you're a roofer I just posted to another post you made where you said you were a roofer
so not sure if you have an emd
but if you had good seo results before, you probably did
many roofers that had nice organic didn't know the reason was their name, they traded as their GEO with roofing and roofer before the net came to be
so when the net started they just got their name .com and it was an emd and minor work made it pop
they all saw huge drops 7 weeks ago all geo emds for roofing
the reason
roofing and roofer are worth over 5 bucks cpc to google
so google hit you if you had an emd
which you may have had since you are now in a seo forum asking why you fell
recent drops was due to emd kill switch google put in place 6 or 7 weeks ago
congrats on having mobi content, many small companies do not and mobi is fast becoming the best lead generator

Hi 1leads. Thanks for that info.
I dont know whether the drop is for the emd. My main competitors for my major keys are using emd's and they rank higher. Mabey the drop has not come for them yet?
does this code look right for the redirect- in order for google not to punish:
<?php
include("mobile_detect.php");
$detect = new Mobile_Detect();
if ($detect->isMobile()) {
// any mobile platform
header ('Location:
}
?>
My friend gave it to me. he builds sites, but i dont want to add anything for google to further drop my rankings for.
cheers,
phil.
oh, my site is melbourneroofingrestorations if it helps.
