targetting markets overseas

I undertand a little about search engines, and the popular ones used here in the UK, but I loose it when trying to undertand the different search engines and italics/languages used abroad.

Any ideas on finding out which search engines and directories are used in the East, mid East and Far East?

Other information regarding how effective it is to use english written keywords with the above SE and directories would be a great start.
