Question Should SEO "LINK BUYING" be Regulated or SERPs /Penalized?

Should SEO classically be about Optimzation

Should SEM be about Paid eAdvertisement

Just like Search Engines are pressured to make their "Sponsored Links" known to the surfing public...

Should Web sites (especially Prominent and influential ones) be compelled to indicate which links are being Paid For?

How can a firm call itself an SEO if the bulk of their PageRanks come from piggy-backing off someone elses popilarity via payment? ops:

Is this really fair - or is it fair game in a very competative industry - where blured lines are being drawn in these professions

And of course, directories are paid exchanges - but everyone knows Yahoo and Looksmart's policies - so SEs Programmers (if they chose to) could factor that in algorithmically.

Should a bit of "standardized" code be mandated in such hyperlinks to give warning to spiders and Search Engines what "priority" to give this Link?

Would this help universally to make link-based SEs & SERPs inherently more relevant?

Is it possible that Yahoo and MSN(preview) de-prioritizing Link Popularity in their SERPs was a result of ...

In a perfect world all sites would be ranked purely on content and quality based on the search term used. It's amazing how much you have to look through search results just to find one site pertaining to what you are looking for. I think that revealing or giving less weight to a paid link would be pointless. Those paying for the edge would just move on the the next big thing to get an edge. Search engine position will always be open to manipulation so plugging one hole will open another. We are getting closer and closer to purely paid results.
