Should I submit every page of my site to the search engines?

Or should I just submit the main pages? Home, Catalog, etc. I know ODP will only take one page, but should I submit to the other engines?

Thanks, Renee

I'm not an expert at this as I am still learning, but it is my belief that it would be unwise to submit every page of your site to a search engine. You have the chance of appearing as SPAM and thus blacklisting your site from ever being crawled. Most search engines are smart enough to know to crawl your site, but don't expect them to crawl the entire thing on its first visit. You have to respect the search engines, and in return they will respect you.

It is not necessary to submit every page. The crawlers will visit the links on you pages and in so doing find your other pages.

Quote:
Please note: Only the top-level page from a host is necessary; you do not need to submit each individual page. Our crawler, Googlebot, will be able to find the rest. Google updates its index on a regular basis, so updated or outdated link submissions are not necessary. Dead links will 'fade out' of our index on our next crawl when we update our entire index

There is also a possibility that submitting every page of your site could be considered to be detrimental.

I read a while back that it is not detrimental to submit all your pages, but you should restrict yourself to submitting a few a day and not using a automated scripts.

Then again we're not even sure that googlebot is even connected to the addurl page, and they have said that nobody outside a site's webmasters can hurt it.

Ahhhh who the hell knows. I would limit myself to a few pages a day to be on the safe side or just rely on the spiders to follow your site's structure.

Get links back to you. The search engines will find you. There is no need to submit to google, it will find you thru backlinks. Get a good robots text file in your root dir, and text links not hidden in javascript on your pages, then the engines will crawl. No need to submit even one page, but if you do, just submit the first page. If it is optimized well, the engines will find the rest without you taxing their servers.

and add a sitemap, and if you can do custom error pages, put a site map there also. great way to keep people on your site as well.
