The problem with the paid directories is that their internal pages doesn't have the same PR as that of home page.

I do'nt see the value in paid directories. Search engines have replaced them.

I suggest free directories at first but if you do have the budget paid directories is helpful.

'Google attacking paid links' is actually an old issue and at the moment Google and others haven't penalized directories yet and I ain't sure if they will as a directory can help these search engines rank the websites (directories filter many websites manually and this is good so why penalizing these efforts).

I respect your opinion but I don't agree ;) I think a dir. listing can bring you some good.

Well, if PPC is dumping money down the drain and free directries are old school and take 6 months to get in and now Rumor has it they discredit paid directories... WTF is your options. Lets say your an outsanding person with a great site and you do the "Right thing" what is that exactly? I mean, if you cant get it for free and you cant pay then what exactly do you suggest?

Free directories all the time. There's no guarantee how long a directory will last, so your $70, might last 3 months and the owner jacks it in because he's got other interests. He's got your cash and the site has gone.

If you need high PR links ask people with a powerful blog or portal, even do a deal with them somehow.

That isn't what they are "attacking"... it's link schemes, PR schemes, and shortcuts to manipulate.

...but you'll spend time acquiring dot.edu links... to me that's an investment of time and costs $200/hour...

How much is a dot.edu link to you... (investment wise)?

EVERYTHING COSTS!

Nonetheless, I don't link links either... I buy "reviews"!

At times I have put in quite a few hours and realized only 1-2 .edu links, but other times I have had .edu's just fall into my lap. On average... I bet over the years, including the content that .edu's link to, I have invested 15-20 hours per .edu link. What you have to look at though... once you get a .edu or .gov they stay and are powerfull for years afterwards. Many other links are fickle with some being akin to a one night stand.

I guess submitting in free directories would serve its purpose in the long run. And if you really do have the budget to spend, opt for the paid ones as well or invest it to something else that could get you more traffic (PPC, targetted links, banners, etc.) - after all thats what we all crave for ;)

I suggest submitting to Free Directories since you could get quality backlinks here without spending a single centavo. It might take some time to be approved here but at least you'll not think about any fees...

Same here, I'll go for free directories. Though, if you
have budget for PPC and you think your site needed
one then you go for it, but we recommend to try
Free first.

why pay for directories that no one visits!

Put your money into google adwords and yahoo PPC and don't worry about these paid directory scams...the amount of traffic and ranking they bring to you is little.

I still prefer free directories rather than paid directories.. I have read to other forums that there are few paid directories that using no-follow tags..
