If you can post a different article or at least a different version of the article to each directory.

This will help you get the most from your posting efforts and avoid duplicate content.

Also do not post an articleon your own site that you have posted on an article directory.

What will you do with 2000 article directories? I feel really amazed when people ask questions such as this one, or like "i need 3000 directories for submissions".

Gimme a break.....when the desired things can be achieved with a handful of directories or article submission websites which are of some quality.....why do you need them in such mammoth numbers.....?

I think it was said already but ideally, you want to keep your articles hosted on your own site and use social bookmarking to publicize it. If you do decide to mass distribute your articles make sure you have variations of your articles otherwise you risk getting banged with duplicate content penalties. If your article is that good, people will begin linking to it on their own which is the best possibility.

Regarding press releases, I'm not totally sure if this fits into the same scheme as articles. I am actually interested in this myself as we have thought about creating press releases for upcoming events. You usually distribute press releases to many media outlets so I am not sure if you can get caught up with dupe content. So, if anyone can shed some light on this, I would be interested.
