If you redirect the non-www to the www, or the opposite, you'll only have one set. Then, if you pick to use the non-www, get links to point to the non-www version.

...and pick the one that:
1) you like best
2) other websites seem to like best when they link back to you

It will be good for back links to add www but first of all your site needs to be redirect from www to non www version or vice versa.

I have sites that require subdomains. For those sites using the www seems to be the most logical approach.

Do 301 redirect code for this site.It is main part of seo.And it is upto to you want redirect www.abc to abc.com or abc.com to www.abc you have to use redirect code for better ranking of your site in google

I prefer without www since it makes URL address 4 characters shorter.

First i think you redirect non www link to www. It's better if you use http://www (dot) abc (dot) com

Why on earth would that be better?

You can simply use 301 redirect on your .htaccess file, it can redirect you www version to non www or vice verse, according to the codes.

First and the main you do is redirect without www to with www and start building the links from www...

Google Crawler consider it two websites.
