Question Would too many canonical backlinks can harm your website?

I have thousands of cross domain canonical backlinks pointing to my website. Would too many canonical tag backlinks can harm your website in any way?

Let me shed a little light on this ....

Cross-domain canonicals, they have been cropping up a lot lately. They can be used for purposes not envisioned by some.

You can for instance use a canonical on Site A pointing to Site C and on Site B pointing to Site C. Basically you are telling Google that Site A and Site B contain duplicate content from Site C. This is for pages owned by the same entity, and one thing to note, the pages using such canonicals have to be highly similar in content. To use this method it is recommended that you use it on sites that you "OWN" and would benefit the user. Use them on pages of extremely similar content.

If you omit the rules, then it could cause you problems. It could be considered spam. We all know that Google hates spam. So to use it for ranking purposes, and to use it on pages not so similar, this is a recipe that can lead to disaster if not done correctly.

So when you say you have thousands of cross domain canonical urls, well without some research in to the relevance of the pages and domains, it could be bad or could be good.
I would think from your statement you are doing this in excess. So are you experiencing any down turn in rankings as of late ?
If you have never failed in your life, you have never achieved anything Noteworthy !
