Why nofollow could lead to the death of linking

Last month Google announced it will never follow or 'remember' links with the 'nofollow' attribute. We should as ourselves what implications this has on the SEO industry (or the web world in general).

What we know (although the number is debated) that th majority of web sites out there are not optimized. That means w pick and choose what they apply. If someone catches wind that you can actually HURT your rankings by linking to bad places, what's stop people from just doing nofollow on everything?!

In the business world nothing is free, so if you're not a 'nice webmaster' then you wo'nt be giving out links for free. I mean face it, if links are really for your users, then it makes no different to nofollow or not.

Here are some reasons why webmasters may opt to adopt blanket nofollow.

    1) Why give if you get nothing in return?

    2) Webmasters just don't know better.

So assuming nofollow goes widespread that will force GOogle to do a few things.

    1. They may change the algorithm to give links less weight.

    2. Content will supremely reign (not just reign, but SUPREMELY REIGN)

    3. Google may give more weight to the quality and types of outgoing links without nofollow.

So then, what are your thoughts? Are you going to blanket nofollow?

Great post, in general I don't use any outbound links on my site as its an ecommerce site unless they relate to the rss feeds I use to keep content fresh.

As you said... most websites are not optimized and thus most webmasters know little to nothing about nofollow - instead they link because the content on the other site is valuable to their visitors. These are the links that are most valuable to determining the true quality of websites. Links on SEOed websites are not reliable measures of quality as they can be bought, sold, traded or used for other manipulation.

So if all SEOs start using nofollow, that will accomplish Google's goals 100%. Then the only sites that are linking without nofollow are the ones that are voting for true content value.

This might be a good thing for search quality.... sites supported by paid, traded, manufactured, and other manipulated links will tank.

Always the optimist! I think eventually enough people will catch on that Google will have to get more creative in their ranking algos.... There are many variables in this discussion though, just throwing a wrench in the works!

The more google moves away from links and on-page factors (which I strongly believe they are doing)... the less reverse engineering we can do.... also, as the start to use site visitor actions to rank sites they then start rewarding true website quality and not savvy SEO.
