Depends entirely on the quality of the site site you are targetting. A powerful blog with dofollowed comments work best in my experience for rankings change.

Nothing better than focused natural links though - why they are so hard to come by. When somebody links to you, ask them to change the text ;) - this is why ading content to your site is one of the best forms of linkbuilding.

Rule of thumb - generally the easier a link is to get the lower quality it is.

another rule - stay away from the very popular services and forums. I would think Google has just about all of these devalued by now. Find new niche sites that dont sell links.

Something else to think about. Some links are for PR, some are for trust, some are for anchor text. Get a spread, over time.

While buying crap links still work, surely Google will do something about this, sometime.

The best way to create backlinks is to be as natural as possible. The more relevant the link the better. Creating valuable content that people would link to is the best way to get backlinks IMO.

Natural is always best (via link bait) but out of the above mentioned, I would definitely say blog comments as long as they are dofollowed. Many forums block links within the thread and article submission sites will quickly receive newer, fresher articles thus pushing yours down in a hurry. Lastly, directory submissions do help but a bit of research needs to be done for each directory. The main landing pages on directories usually receive good PR but the page your link will actually be on is either nofollowed or deep into the site where PR can't reach.

Make sure you are not commenting on blogs just to get your link in there. Many blog owners frown upon that and will not allow you to post comments. If you see a post where you feel your site and/or content can be of assistance in any way, post it. Do your best to get the keyword you are looking to target in the anchor text.

Natural links are best? While there is nothing more satisfying than natural links, having an input in the anchor text is worth its weight in gold. What would yu pick if you had the choice?

I think the op was originally asking which unnatural links were best - of the above, I think blog comments, if on a powerful blog which passes juice.

Directory submissions still work it seems, en mass, but time consuming. Good for masking your unatural links (but then again, the best way to mask unnatural links is to build linkable content on your site IMO

I see your point and agree sand. If i misunderstood the OP question, I apologize.

I was trying to establish the point of recommended linking method. Many will agree that more time should be spent writing intriguing content rather than trying to manually build links through forum signatures, directories, etc. While these may work over time, writing content that strikes the chord of webmasters and visitors in some way or another generally lead to more links down the road. Interesting content can be circulated at an impressive rate in today's world especially with the social bookmarking scene.

sandpetra agrees: I agree wholeheartedly that writing useful content is essential as part of the mix
