What is the limit of characters or words for META description & keywords?

Hi,

I want to add meta description & keywords in a website. But I don't know exactly what is the limit for it?

for META keywords & description -
how many words or characters ?

i do not use meta keywords tag because major search engines does not give importance to it. I only use meta description tag and the limit which i use is 200-250 characters.

i saw one site, it says 200-300

In my opinion the perfect number of words or characters in META keywords & description is "ZERO".

Just as i pointed, whats the need of asking this??? Take a look at the wquestion, the guy just asked the number of characters needed in meta tags...

I dont mind anyone abusing me,..lol why would i care? unless its something personal..rivals will always try n turn u down, those who survive, will rule those dont, get buried..

I would suggest you to handle everything in a calm way, if someone has a different view, he will put it up..sometimes its our communication gap, and we think the guys deliberately did it..

After all its all words, and we cannot attach emotions/expressions along with words..

I am sure you are gonna take this on a +ve note and solve things out amicably..

Thats some great advice LKS. Even i dont mind abuses and negative comments, as that was the way i started in this forum and had a plenty of them.

Although that "upbringing" comment is something too much and speaks volumes for someone who says such a crap.

Just another advice for this guy, as new_seo suggested, if you are in a public forum, do not assume everyone agreeing with you. I wasnt the first one disagreeing with his posts.

Anyways for me, every second gone is a history. This guy is always welcome here, well if he wants....

It depends on the first engine first. Google reads your meta description tag up to ~160 characters, try to keep them under 155. Keep it short, and stylish! No one loves long and complicated descriptions.

The keywords are less important, but you should be sure that they are refering to the content of your site. Spamming lots of keywords just to fulfill the limit is not the right way! Keeping it under 160 characters is a good thing to start with.

Google reads up to 160, Yahoo up to 165, and MSN up to 200. From what I remember.
