    Wanting Proof

Is it normal for SEO companies to say they can't give out their clients due to NDAs?

That seems absurd to me. Why should a company care about. I mean if I were a company I wouldn't give out my SEO company, but if another company finds them on their own, then why care if your site is given out. Clearly a potential new customer wants proof they know what they are doing.

I would generally agree with Kernel with a small but...

When I created my own business I had to quit my former job and had at that time to sign a NDA (with my former employer not a client) or something like that that block me for saying that I worked on several projects, mainly for webdesign but one for SEO services.

This being said I never had any client asking me to sign a NDA.

Its legally binding (but I am not a lawyer, obviously)

But an SEO company should have some sort of references, case studies, preferably both, something they can show as proof.

Could be a case of them working with your competitors.

Agencies often specialise in certain industries, and through contacts, references etc they get more work within that industry.

Naturally, this can lead to a conflict in interests that they wouldn't be keen to disclose.

You should never hire an agency who works with your competition. If your potential online marketing vendor won't disclose their list of clients, walk away.

Quite a few years ago I approached a SEO company and when I told them the business sector I was looking for services in they actually turn me down as a client, They said there would be a conflict of interest with an existing client. At the time I was a little annoyed but in all fairness to them that was extremely honest of them. Most companies would have just taken my money.
