Is it violating search engine guidelines? Link Schemes?
We sponsored a cultural event, got a link back from college website to our domain. To help that page gain some authority and to improve the value of that link, I started pointing links from business local listing and directories to that URL.
Is it kind of link scheme? like pointing local listing/directories to college url to pump that page up in turn helping links in that page to gain value? is it violating any search engine guidelines?
Any suggestion is welcomed. Thanks in advance.

Suggestion: risk is risk... you do something that you believe isn't 100% above board thus you risk losing it in the future if Google learns of it and agrees it isn't above board... but the rewards are equally real. You can get ahead of the game doing this very thing.
The discipline of link scheming is using them to generate a level of revenue so you can afford to stop... I REPEAT 'SO YOU CAN AFFORD TO STOP!'
If your plan is merely build a cheap effective way to garner top results that will sustain your business... you are merely fooling yourself.
