Useability vs. internal links, How to maintain guided traffic?
I have a site that has been up about 4 years. We have a Google PR of 5, but my traffic is not where I want it. I have been buying traffic from PPC's, but I want to optimize for more "unpaid" traffic.
We developed a "controlled, or guided" traffic flow concept a few years ago because of the nature of our business. We are in the book publishing business. What I mean by "guided traffic" is that we do not have links from every page to every other page, to prevent people from getting lost, while evaluating our services. You can see what I mean at www we-publish com If you click on any link on the site, your only navigation choices are to continue on the guided path for the subject or the sub-subjects or go back, via a generic "Back" button, which returns you along the path that you followed to get to wherever you went. We have found that this prevents people from getting lost, keeps them "on message" and results in fewer "silly" questions about what we do and how we do it... HOWEVER, we cannot gain PR value from our internal pages using this system. Is there any "tricky" method that we can employ to achieve the PR contribution? What about "commented ot" links to internal pages? Thanks, Earnie B. Last edited by EGOL : June 22nd, 2004 at 12:44 PM. Reason: signature link removed and message body link deactiviated |

Rather than being "tricky" why not be in the open with links. One approach is to put links to each of your important pages as a footer line at the bottom of each webpage.
I understand the idea of "guiding" people through your site but my approach has been to give all visitors uniform navigation that they can learn and rely upon - across the whole site. Perhaps a list of frequently asked questions would reduce the volume of email requests. You do have an FAQ link but it goes offsite to a bravenet page with popups.. top banner distraction... a different look and feel... and a return button to your site that is missing. Bring that info on-site and without the distractions - it will probably reduce your questions.
