    Text on an ecommerce site?

We have an ecommerce website, and our main ranking pages are the category pages, so basically just a list of products. Would you say it is necessary to have a paragraph at the top of these pages? We do this so that we can put some keywords in that paragraph to help with rankings, but some competitors do not do this and just have the products on the pages with no introduction text.

It won't hurt if it's relevant, I'm sceptical as to how much positive impact this has for eCommerce sites though.

A quick look at the top 5 organic results for "running shoes" only one of them has anything more than a line or two.

I agree with Ivan I am currently doing work for an e-commerce site and the most important thing is the heading (H1 tag). If the description is relevant it won't hurt you if you decide to include. Another key factor with e-commerce sites is interlinking and backlinks.

Do it, as it will probably help you a little. We can't replicate the metrics & signals for the top ecommerce sites on Google, so what works for them, will not work for us most of the times, so before having a lot of quality backlinks, write a nice description and try to focus on a few long tail keywords.

If it is relevant then it won't affect your website negatively and as you said it is an eCommerce website so it is nice to practice to have description on the pages for the products, it is also good for users too to understand about the particular product or service if you don't stuff the keywords in it.

Having category pages optimized for the general terms is the best approach. You can also keep the product names based on the keywords. This will also help you with your rankings.

Even if your competitors have not employed this thing but if you want to place your keywords there, you can. In fact, it will work pretty well if you work strategically.

Exactly, we can employ any strategy, if not permanently then on temporary basis too.
