    Suggestion for 404 pages

I have blog section on our website and we have removed the thin content blogs (like 30 + blogs) & now they are showing 404.

Once John Mueller said Google will automatically de-index the web pages that have 404 status code so anybody has any idea what should I do?

Should I wait or should I put 410 status code for that?

Some of my findings are following
    • Update your content and republish it
    • If your previous URL holds any value then put 301 redirect to respected pages
    • And if you want to completely remove than 410 is more powerful
    • Apart from this you should create new page URL like "www.gotchseo.com/backlinks/" so, in future, you will update updated information on the same URL

    Hey,
If those URLs are not de-indexed automatically, you can do it manually also.
And 410 status code will be great instead of 404.

So de-index by self or put 410.

Yes, some of the advice you received is perfect. Here is my formula.

If 404 must happens, I redirect to closest matching page, sometimes the parent page. Almost never a 404 page unless the entire category is gone. In that case, 410 is much better as suggested.
