Spiders Crawl <a href="site"><img src=image.gif></a>

Do They Not? Is is treated as backlink? Never seen one using the link: check though? shrug.
I want to use a graphic as a navigation link to a subpage. Not interested in anchor text to subpage. In fact do not want the text as it will dilute the main page. Anyone use this scheme?

Yes they crawl this. What you can do to create higher keyword density is to use the ALT and TITLE tags in your image linking. Ex:

<a href="site" title="keyword"><img src=image.gif alt=keyword></a>

I have seen several backlinks that were a result of image links.
