    Smile Silos in 2017?

Is it still good practice to use a silo structure in 2017? Do they help with SEO or are I just wasting my time? Would like to hear some opinions from SEOs who have some experience with page structure. This is for a Wordpress site. The site is has to have a page for each USA state, so we have 50 pages just for the states and then other categories such as reviews with multiple pages linked to that. Any advice would be much appreciated.

It won't last long but it does work providing it's done right, however that many might be first in detection.

Yes, It would take some forethought to get it right. Seems it may be a site that would benefit from say WordPress...

Siloing is definitively something you should take in account when building a website but I prefer talking about semantic cocoons than pure siloing. When done well it generally also improves UX by providing an effective navigation.

What is the biggest difference between siloing and topic clusters? Is there a difference?

    Question

    My main concern is they dramatically lengthen the URL;

From what I read the closer a page is to the home page the better for SEO home.com/page

With a silo it could end up home.com/state/laws-on-something/page

So I would think that is worse for SEO?

You would think not, although the way the links are arranged could possibly make a difference. I,m new to this so to be honest not sure.

Maintaining silo structure for website creates proper grouping of content and link signals which helps to display the information to the search engines.

There is not a big difference in terms of way of thinking between cocoons and silos. But I'll try to explain it as clearly as possible, not easy....

A silo structure is very linear and generally implemented only at a menu level.

    SEO (main page)
    > Local SEO (sub page)
    > Multilingual SEO (sub page)
    > ..... (sub page)

    WEB Design (main page)
    > Site (sub page)
    >E-commerce (sub page)
    > ...(sub page)

At least that how I see it implemented most of the time.

While Coccon work with index pages, mixte pages, complementary pages see following images (if you have several coccons create a top level main page and apply the system several times

    Structure
    structure.jpg

    Links
    link.jpg

Hope this was clear.... Hard to explain the concept like this, I'll try and write an article about it when I'll have some spare time.

thanks for info. I have setup all the main topics as main pages. Then related subjects around those topics as sub pages, the sub pages link back to the main topic page. Not sure what method that is but have already seen a small increase in ranking.
