SEO Basics for a Beginner

Hello all,

I am student and just landed an internship for a company that needed an SEO Analyst for the summer(organic search only). I have had experience in Information Architecture, web content developement but not SEO.

My tasks and mission are:
• Translate business goals effectively into search engine marketing strategies.
• Review site for search engine friendly design principles.
• Develop comprehensive search engine optimization recommendations and execute all phases of implementation and ongoing management.
• Remain up-to-date on current search engine news and trends.
• Analyze keyword and search engine performance
• Manage keyword lists, create new keywords, and phase out ineffective words
• Work with production team to build relevant landing pages that drive conversion

I know a little about optimization but i really don't know where to start this project...

What are the necessary first steps before starting anything?

Would anybody here recommend me articles, books or any type of ressources to help start this work...?

Regards
TheHandler
ps: the reason i am sort of lost is because i am doing the internship remotely.

Start at the beginning. <ducks for cover>

Seriously:

1. Review existing site, marketing efforts, business strategy and available tools (conversion tracking, log analysis, etc.)
2. Analyze current keyword performance (log referrers)
3. Analyze keywords relevant to business strategy (keyword analysis)
4. develop a plan forward

not sure why they hired someone with 'no experience' for something as complex as seo.
...or why you would take such a job.
[sounds like a 'nightmare' waiting to happen.]

You'd be better off trying to find someone that you could actually sit down and talk with.... Figure you'll be talking for about 10 hours. Since you are a web developer - you could probably understand most of the things that are going on... But if your company is will to put there money on you. They may be interested in getting you the tools you'll need...

What you need is a real good crash course in SEO. Past and Present.... Very important to not skip the learning process cause there lots you learn in the middle. Get someone that's real good. It's taken me years to learn what I know. I've learned slow, but I've learned good. But you are definetly in the right place... I've been on the web for a long time..... About 3 years.... 3 years in SEO - that's about 70 years in the world of the internet and SEO.... things change so fast.
I've honestly never found a better seo forum than right here....

Invest in yourself.... by learning lots now. You can use it in the future on your own sites. Your current skill set will become much more valuable with this SEO experience.
