Search Engine's Jocky for Position
So...Anyone have any input on the SE wars? Let us begin to make phropetic statements as to whom will hold the next SE God title.
Yahoo has been using Slurp, trying to catch up, trying different things...etc... MSN is working to knock off Google, they apparenty have a few tricks up there sleves...etc... Google is holding fast to their position, introducing "GMail", staying #1...etc... Teoma is, well, Im not sure....etc... Ask Jeves, well, Not sure still...etc... 7 |

Hopefully I remember this thread in two years time. It's amazing how fastly subjects like discussions are wiped out of memory... I doubt a fast change, but there will be a time when Google rules no more as single dominant. MSN is pretty good nowadays, same applies for Yahoo and Inktomi. If I must prophecy, then I predict year 2006 will be the year of MSN and Inktomi. IMO the biggest challange for all SE's is the question how they manage to keep users happy with results. This means how they manage to fight spam, doorway pages etc. unwanted results of SEO and provide quality pages on top. Google has a nice lead to others, but they might tramble to their own trickery.

Just saw some stats on another thread. According to that, Yahoo is getting more web searches than Google now.

Msn
I have this feeling that MSN is going to emerge victorious, if not only for a short while....
They have all the money in the world to make it happen, eventhough that is not a solution, they've certianly got the $$$ to make any of their goals possible, if they handle it right. 7 |

Was just wondering, is there anything we, webmaster, can do anything to prevent it? There are thousands of people here in this forum. I am sure most of them won't really love it when MSN monopolizes the market. Can we do something to prevent it? What could it be? |

Would it matter if MSN monopolized the SE market? That's everyones goal...people complain about Google now, people complained about Yahoo before google came along, etc....

More important is what SE your audience uses. For example, our mainsite is aimed for technical minded users. There Google brings 97% of traffic. It's not due to bad positions in other SE's - in MSN we have better rankings than Google. People who are technicly oriented just don't use other than Google. The opposite may apply to something more of *family products* like insurances. There Yahoo, MSN and Inktomi have greater marketpower. |

The situation is different here. This is Microsoft! I can't believe they are going to monopolize yet another market. It's personal this time. I hate them! |

Why do you think they will monopolize just because of their bigger budget. I use the SE that brings me the best results as I think most people do. I don't use Ask.com because you have to wade through all the sponsored ads before you get to what you are looking for. I think you are discounting usefulness by just stating that its spending budget, etc that will win. That may get them to the top for a little while but it will take results to monopolize. |

They own the browser used by the masses. They would own search if they put a search box on it and sent typo URLs to their own site. They have not used their properties well IMO.

I agree. Stating that different SE's would be used by different markets would be a pretty good statement, however, MSN has no excuse for not getting the job done. They may not want to draw too much attention to themselfs, like with the Netscape/IE issue... As soon as you get to the top, someone wants to shoot you down. Thats the law of the under-dog...it doesn't matter who it is, if you become successful, someone will always want to take you down. My money is on MSN. |
