Almost all the essential elements of audit are included in it and very well explained but the thing is the standards are being changing all the time so you should keep updating the standard of the audit and should not stick to one thumb rule.

    Hi Tandra,
Before defining what goes into an SEO Audit, we should agree what is SEO and what is the purpose of an SEO audit.

My definition of SEO is attracting as many relevant potential clients as possible via generic search and encouraging them to undertake the desired action(s) within the resources provided by the SEO client.

In my book, an SEO audit is the starting research for planning, implementing, controlling and monitoring an SEO program.

    1. SEO Audit Research:

    • To define the different types and characteristics of potential customers that your client wants to attract
    • To define the products/services your SEO client wants to promote
    • To define the problems/solutions your SEO client wants to solve/provide
    • To define how the target customers search as they progress through their purchasing process
    • To assess what searcher intent algorithms will be implemented during the info seeking process
    • To assess what types of web pages are regularly top of the search results
    • To assess what real competitors regularly occur in the top 10 search lists
    • To assess what, if any SEO tactics are implemented by the SEO client's real competitors
    • What interests and resources does the SEO client bring to an SEO program? Do they want to write page content? Can they do it well? What historic examples, case studies, client references, etc. are available for the program. What are the time and money constraints on the SEO program?

Some of this research must be supplied by the SEO client and some from SEs. You won't find much of it available from any SEO tool.

If there is a pre-existing website, it needs to be audited and this should include technical components like:

    • Can SEs index all site pages?
    • Can they "read" all relevant page content?
    • Is the site structured for optimal passing of PageRank?
    • Is it targeting the most useful search words?
    • Do all page publishing techniques and info naming conventions target the defined search words.
    • Is the site structured to provide relevant info for the different target customer types?

The long list you publish essentially covers this small component of an SEO audit. However, it misses assessing many mission critical SEO factors and some of its components are of questionable value.

    2. Planning

The SEO audit should provide important data to better plan optimal SEO tactics and strategies.

The two most important SE ranking factors have always been:

    • The level of competition for a specific search query
    • The SEO resources provided by the SEO client

There is no point trying to target top ranking for a frequently used search query where the top 20 places are filled with pages from 800lb gorilla websites that have unlimited SEO budgets if your client is a small business site. What the SEO needs to do is define SEO tactics that avoid head-on competition with the gorillas while still delivering as many potential customers as possible within resource constraints.

An SEO audit should also help with site content and individual web page content planning. It is the sequencing of information flow, providing info summaries with links to more detailed info that is an important SEO skill. None of this is addressed in the technical list above.

An SEO program should then address:

    3. Implementation
    4. Control
    5. Monitoring

Then the SEO cycle should be repeated...

I'd suggest calling the list you posted above, a technical web page publishing checklist rather than an SEO audit.

    Hi terrymann

Hello, I'm trying to optimize my website commercialicemakers.com and working with some SEO-expert, but results are not so good. Can someone tell me what is wrong?
Quite possibly it could be the way you're trying to get backlinks. All links on this forum are "no follow" and will not help you rank your site. Nor will they get your site any traffic, why, because this is an SEO forum and folks here are looking for help, not ice makers.

You have had your site up for quite some time...

You have very few back links.....

According to webmeup you only have around 7 backlinks. You should have a few more than that since 2004.

What areas are you wanting help in that your current SEO provider is not providing. Or were you here just for the back link ???
