Search Engine Opt. - question
I am no SEO guru - however, I have a couple of questions. I was doing some google searching the other day and came up on a site: www.netjets.com
I looked into their coding practices and seo strengths and low and behold I found these sneaky "webmasters" placing <noscript> tags in the pages with a couple of paragraphs of text and keywords/links. My question is - is this considered "spamming" to a Search engine (google, yahoo, etc.)? Thanks for the feedback. Oh and is there someway I can report a Web site for spamming Search Engines? Thanks! |

Well - they didn't use the noscript tag EXACTLY as intended, but on the other hand I'm not really shocked. It's not as if they stuffed it with 350 lines of links and keyword repeats.
You can report spamming if you want, but if you do, choose a REAL BAD example (one that's really tricking people, for example sites linking to smut with links that read cartoons). The search engines are hard to impress - you know Instead, use what you find, but don't exaggerate. Uncompetitive areas call for clean techniques. If you see a site that ranks well, and you're thinking "Well... okay" regardless of the techniques they used, then chances are they are ranking just where they rightfully belong, either because of their techniques OR because they've got a couple of penalties already

Wit, they ARE using noscript tags "exactly" how they were intended to be used.
That site uses javascript navigation, so theyve put their navigation in a list within the noscript tag. totally ethical, and exactly the way i would have done it. I just wouldnt have used javascript navigation in the first place in order to 'need' the noscript tags. Ironchef, dont report it. They are doing nothing wrong. Instead, as wit suggested, if you decide to report a site, make sure it is a site that is being either VERY sneaky and without a doubt trying to manipulate, or a site that is blatantly doing stuff against googles guidelines. |

Hmm... the original purpose of the NOSCRIPT tag is to provide alternative contents to those browsers that don't support Javascript or other client-side languages.
So, if a feature (some text, some navigation menu, etc.) is accessible only to Javascript-enabled browsers, then a NOSCRIPT tag should be used to create some alternative not-Javascripted content for those users that do not use Javascript in their browsers. The site www.netjets.com is perfectly browsable with browsers not supporting Javascript, so a NOSCRIPT tag is currently useless. The NOSCRIPT tag has been used just to add keywords and keyword rich anchor texts to the web page. In theory it is spam, but it is so light-weight that I would never fill a spam report for it. |

Lowlevel, you are totally right, sorry wit for jumping on ya.
I didnt check by turning off my javascript. The site has not only used the noscript tag for no reason, but also made his site look uglier to people with javascript turned off. Even still, minor offense, if anything only done because he didnt understand that he couldve done it with .css instead of javascript rollovers and had totally crawlable navigation. (by that i mean he would have benefitted from anchor text, as it seems thats what he was after) |
