Search engine friendly site structure - what is the secret behind it?

Hi all,

I have come to know recently that all search engines give importance to a specific site structure. Can I get some suggestions in this forum about this subject? What actually we should keep in mind developing a search engine friendly site.

Thanks and best regards

Arun

you shouldnt have to many levels, for 60 pages, two levels(index not included) are maximum for a good optimisation, If you have difficulties with that, do a site map page, which links to each page...

Do your keyword research... pick the most important ones that you will go after... then make a site map using those keywords as major categories. This is how I determine the structure of my sites.

Lightbulb Best SEO Policy

What I will suggest is, do the followings:
  1. Have a clean site (organized structure with clear folder distribution)
  2. Use style sheets (helps to keep small file size & easy control)
  3. Use proper file & folder nomanclature (e.g. might well use keywords as file/folder name)
  4. Use H1 tags & also use ALT tags (i.e. follow conventions)
  5. If posible, get W3C approval on HTML/XHTML & CSS etc.
  6. Make sure to use proper META TAGs & clear TITLE (with keywords)
  7. Try to build backlinks
  8. Put a sitemap (it helps the spiders) & allow easy naivational links (e.g. breadcrumbs)
  9. Use robots.txt (helps spiders measure your sites' accessibility & what not to index)
  10. NEVER USE ANY SPAMMING TECHNIQUES (e.g. spam text/keyword flooding etc.)
  11. Try & build quality CONTENT (remember: CONTENT is the KING)
  12. Submit to SEs
  13. Check server logs & enhance site accordingly
Hope this helps.
Best regards
WC
