Arrow Search Console - SOFT 404

    Hi,

I noticed at search console that I have two SOFT 404 URL's, so in order to avoid this I redirected these URL's, to relevant real pages on my website, is this a good or bad move because now I just read at support.google that "A soft 404 occurs when your server returns a real page for a URL that doesn't actually exist on your site. This usually happens when your server handles faulty or non-existent URLs as "OK," and redirects the user to a valid page like the home page or a "custom" 404 page.
This is a problem because search engines might spend much of their time crawling and indexing non-existent, often duplicative URLs on your site. This can negatively impact your site's crawl coverage because your real, unique URLs might not be discovered as quickly or visited as frequently due to the time Googlebot spends on non-existent pages."
, so I am a little bit confused right now?

    Best regards,

    Hi wm,

    Redirecting them is OK.

What they're talking about is that sometimes webmasters add a custom 404 page that utilises the wrong http header (status) code... (200 instead of 404) which can result in mass listings of non-existent urls and have (massive) impact on your crawl budget.

To check if this problem applies to you:
    1. Go to a simple status code checker
    2. Add your domain details followed by a non-existent URL
    3. Click "Check Headers"... The URL should return a status code 404.

If it returns a status code of 200, you need to address the issue (but I would still keep the redirects you added... google obviously got those urls from somewhere)

Thank you, it shows a status code 404.

My domain was example.org but we moved to .com, and now most of these problems are coming from .org, so sometimes pages that are important to us I am redirecting them to relevant pages that I have now.
