Same server, different IP

Hi all,

If I was to host multiple sites on the one dedicated server, but assign them all a different IP and have them all linked together, would this cause problems with the search engines? By that I mean would I be penalized?

Basically I'll have one main site and lots of smaller sites which - while all having entirely unique content of their own - will essentially be portals for the main site, but want to be sure this won't hamper my search engine results for any of the sites before going ahead with it.

Cheers!

Baz

I'm almost 100% you cannot be penalized, but being on the same C IP Block ... backlinks from the little sites to the main site may not count as powerful as links from domains hosted on different IPs on different C IP Blocks.

Thanks for your help guys. That's pretty much what I thought for Google anyway - I take it the others work much the same? I believe Google puts the most 'weight' on backlinks, correct?

seo_sensey - when you say the links may not be as powerful, is that based on experience/evidence, or just a hunch?

Not my personal experience because never had the possibility to test it.
I talked to some people on another SEO forum who were almost sure about it based on their own experience. Anyway ... once I said "may not count as powerful as links from domains hosted on different IPs on different C IP Blocks" you can deduce I wasn't sure

That's what we often do. We rent one server and set up different c-class ip-addresses.

Aha! And do you find it causes any SEO problems?
