    Referral links

    Hi!

What is the best way to have a referral program and at the same time avoid canonical issues?

Right now we allow users to link to any of our pages with ?ref=username appended to the link but as far as I understand this must be terrible for SEO as each link may easilly have hundreds of duplicates in some time...

What would be the best way to solve this problem?

There is an automated system that can help with this alot. Sites link to you with a plain link. PM me for details.

You can also get some links quickly with it.

If your hosting allows you to have a subdomain. Use it as your referral page. Block it in robots.txt if it contains highly similar content with the rest of your site.

Visitors can visit this page but google bots will not.

By this you mean to create a separate sub-domain for each user?

    Oh I understand... Something like referral.domain.com/?ref=username ?

The only two problems I see is it won't pass the PR and we would have problems if we would have a subdomain for a part of the site...

Another idea I had is to automatically count referrals if smeone visits authors profile or files... even if it was from google etc. but we won't count them anywhere else... This would solve all problems right?

Google does provide a good guidelines in setting referrals. Make sure the page also offers useful content, not just for the sake of getting referrals.

You may try to do some testing at first and try to avoid violating the Google quality guidelines.
