    Redirects and duplicate content

Hi there just wandering if you guys could give me some pointers in these areas.

My website is as follows example.co.uk

    I also have this example.co.uk/index.html

I was doing some reading on google and it says that I should use a redirect for the /index.html to the normal address

Just wandering if this is correct and I read it right?

Also my website has service area pages for the county that I service, these pages have quite similar content but have slight variations, google has indexed some of the pages but not all .... seems like they are not going to index the rest.

Is this my penalty for having very similar content, I know other people do a similar thing but how do they get their pages listed, I read somewhere about the rel=canonical use but could I use this for those pages?

Would appreciate anyone that has experience in this area to give some advice, doing lots of SEO at the mo

    thanks in advance, Jay

I don't see it as a penalty but it surely will create issues because of duplicate content. 301 redirect is more important when there are two different domain names being considered but in your case its only the page extension. Nothing to worry..just make sure that the content you use is unique and authoritative.

You may face content duplicacy error in your website, so it will be better to use canonical tag to prevent duplicate error.

You have to redirect your main page to index.html page. Actually google think them as a duplicate content if they are not redirected. You can do social bookmark for the pages haven't indexed till now. See the result after doing social bookmark of the pages. I hope all the pages will be indexed shortly.

    Thanks

    Hi Jackson,

so I have to redirect the example.co.uk to the /index.html

    how would I do that?

    redirect 301 example.co.uk /index.html

obviously the example .co.uk would have the http and www at the front.

When you say bookmarking the urls that have not been indexed, sorry if this sounds dumb lol ... how do I do that?

thanks for your help, much appreciated Jay

In this case, using canonical tag is the best option and also Google recommend it.
