Redirects: 301, 302 which is best to use?

Hi here,
I am implementing a redirecting system for my affiliates and I'd like to use the best, search engine like redirecting. I read around that 301 is the best choice. What do you think about?

Thank you in advance for any idea and thought.

Sincerely,
Fabrizio

A 301 and an 302 redirect are more or less identical, except a 302 is intended to be used as a temporary redirect, perhaps one that's used while a site is under construction or a server is being moved. A 301 is a permanent redirect. Your selection, it appears, should be a 301 permanent redirect.

Thank you for your reply SEO_AM, really appreciated.

But which is the best one to use for search engines?

Thank you again!

Fab.

Either, but you should use the 301 permanent.

Actually...some search engines (Google even) struggle with how to handle a 302 redirect. Its my opinion that 301s should always be used.

Currently, if you know what to do you can destroy your competitor's rankings by using a 302 from your own site. This is hopefully being worked out, but it remains a problem.

do not try redirecting domain.com to www.domain.com !! A popular web directory was banned for this reason. Hopefully, SE alogo's will be adjusted soon to allow that. Just a tip.

This is interesting... how this can be done? Any more information is very welcome (just curious!).

Fab.
